Object history
The drawing on p.24 may be related to the design for the entrance to the Fine Art Society's galleries in New Bond Street on p.42 of sketchbook E.254-1963. Another sketch of the design for a brass sea-horse for A. S. Wortley is on the back of E,482-1963.
Historical context
Some of the sketches in this sketchbook are designs for theatrical costumes for Mrs. Bateman’s production of Shakespeare’s Othello, first performed at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, 20 September 1880. There are also designs for Wilson Barrett’s production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, first performed at the Princess’s Theatre, London, 16 October 1884
