Object history
This drawing is one of 191 loose leaves, from various sketchbooks by the artist, dated 1851 to 1884.

The sketches on E.439-445-1963 of Frankish weapons etc. and of an Anglo-Saxon grave are related to water-colour drawings on pp.30-34 and 59 of the sketchbook E.262-1963.
Historical context
Wilson Barrett’s production of Claudian was first performed at the Princess’s Theatre, London, 6 December 1883.
