Physical description

July is shown as an old man sweating profusely and wearing a shabby hat. A highly stylised sun is seen in the top right corner. The man is harvesting and holds a scythe. He is decorated with the zodiac symbol for the sign Leo (July). At his feet are a snake, a frog, or toad, and a lizard.

This drawing is a design for The British Architect and Northern Engineer calendar for the year 1881, published as a folding plate between pages 176, 177 of Volume 14, July to December 1880.
