Poncho

1990s (made)
Place of origin

This child’s poncho has been hand-knitted in a patchwork of different coloured wools. It has a distinctly 'homemade' look and may well be the work of someone who lives on the fringes of society and deliberately rejects buying clothes readymade from chain stores.

Ponchos originated as peasant dress in South America, where they were usually made from woven fabric. They have come in and out of fashion in Europe and North America. Ponchos became popular in the USA during the 1940s, and the interest in ethnic dress in the 1960s sparked another revival. Ponchos were back in vogue in the autumn/winter collections for 2004/5.

Object history
Registered File number 1994/1072, Streetstyle exhibition 1994-1995, in the exhibition it was part of an outfit called 'Traveller UK 1994' (a young child traveller outfit ; that includes the T-shirt T.1038-1994, the skirt T.1040-1994, the tights T.1041 and the booties T.1042-1994).
Historical context
'Members of the Donga Tribe helped Fraggle assemble this garments outfit by contributing tiny garments which they had acquired at different times and various sources. Their budge is limited and new clothes are not central to their existence so, in a time-honoured tradition, clothes are passed down form brothers and sisters. Babies are often given gifts of handmade garments. Elements such as the patchwork poncho and rainbow hat mirror the style of adult travellers.'
