A PET PARROT Watercolour on paper Kalighat, Kolkata By Kanai Lal Ghosh c. 1920 IS.46-1952 Given by W.G. Archer Not all the paintings produced at Kalighat were religious souvenirs. Many show birds or fish of the region. This simple image of a caged parrot was purchased directly from the artist by V&A curator W.G. Archer in 1932. By this time the Kalighat artists were no longer producing the typical paintings of the area.(27/9/2013)

Object history
The image is one of a series of five paintings purchased by W.G.Archer at Kalighat in 1932 from the artist Kanai Lal Ghosh, a relation of Nibran and Kali Charan Ghosh. When the pictures were acquired the artists were no longer painting as the Kalighat school had ended in about 1925. (Archer:1971, p95).
