Object history
Schiele made the six etchings in 1914 encouraged by Arthur Roessler who provided the portfolio introduction. In 1918 the Gesellschaft für vervielfältigende Künste commissioned Schiele to made the landscape lithograph; when he submitted successively 'Mädchen' and 'Porträt Paris von Gutersloh', both were rejected. Roessler gives an account of these occasions in his introduction and in Erinnerungen an Egon Schiele, Vienna, 1948, pp.67-69, and reproduced 'Kauernde' and 'Kummernis'.
'Porträt Franz Hauer' and 'Mädchen' are reproduced as Pl. 9 and 31 in Egon Schiele als Graphiker by Gustav Kunstler, Vienna, 1946.
