Physical description

Engraving by Joseph Collyer, A.R.A. (1748-1827). Thomas Gurney (1705-1770), shorthand writer at the Old Bailey. Portrait, head and shoulders, facing slightly left, within an oval border of masonry in a rectangle; below on a plinth are books, papers, pens and an inkstand, and on the front of the plinth is a heraldic achievement. Frontispiece to his ‘Brachygraphy’, 9th edition, London, 1778. Lettered with name of sitter.
