Gallery label
Mid-century commercial graphic design reflected the optimism of the postwar era. Operas and ballet were marketed with dynamic, stylised figures and vibrant colour palettes that were characteristic of the period. Reginald Mount was one of many professional graphic designers of the time. He created music marketing imagery as well as designing government campaign posters during the Second World War.(1991)
Object history
This is an early example of Müller-Brockmann's posters for 'serious' concerts in Zürich. Müller-Brockmann and his Bauhaus-trained colleague Max Bill were instrumental in devising the Swiss School's typographical principles. Letters had to be subordinate to sentences which, in turn, had to be subordinate to the main message and overall design.
