This vase, produced in the kilns of Jingdezhen in southern China, is part of a garniture set of five pieces, comprising two trumpet-shaped vases and three jars with lids. They were used in Europe as display pieces on the mantelpiece or on tables and cabinets placed against the walls. The design of ladies on terraces and flowers, arranged in petal-shaped panels, was a popular motif on the export blue and white porcelain of the Kangxi period (1662-1722).

| Physical description | Porcelain vase of baluster form with lid, painted in underglaze blue; the body is moulded with petal-shaped panels, arranged in three bands of eight and alternately containing a lady on a terrace and flowers in a pot. The neck has sprays of flowers, and a band of wicker pattern runs on the shoulders and on the lid's rim. An artemisia leaf in a double circle is painted in underglaze blue on the base. One of a set of five. |
