Object history | From the 'Oeuvre de Juste Aurèle Meissonnier', a volume of engravings after the works of the French designer, architect and goldsmith, Juste Aurèle Meissonnier (1695-1750). These were issued in three editions between 1742 and 1750. The designs of Meissonnier had previously been published in printed sets or cahiers by Chereau the publisher, and were advertised in the Mercure in March 1734. This plate is from a set entitled 'Dousieme livre des Oeuvres de J. A. Messonnier Livre de Chandeliers de Sculpture en Argent' (series letter M), containing a series of plates depicting designs for candelabra and candlesticks. A candelabrum in silver, executed by Claude Duvivier (1734-1735) after the design represented in this plate, is in the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris. |
