Object history
From the 'Oeuvre de Juste Aurèle Meissonnier', a volume of engravings after the works of the French designer, architect and goldsmith, Juste Aurèle Meissonnier (1695-1750). These were issued in three editions between 1742 and 1750. The designs of Meissonnier had previously been published in printed sets or cahiers by Chereau the publisher, and were advertised in the Mercure in March 1734.

This plate is one of three designs for firework set-pieces. The first two plates show designs apparently made for the celebrations at Versailles on the occasion of the marriage of Louise Elizabeth of France with Infante Don Philippe of Spain in August 1739. However there appears to be no evidence that Meissonnier's designs were executed, the general credit being given to Cochin.
