Object history
From the 'Oeuvre de Juste Aurèle Meissonnier', a volume of engravings after the works of the French designer, architect and goldsmith, Juste Aurèle Meissonnier (1695-1750). These were issued in three editions between 1742 and 1750. The designs of Meissonnier had previously been published in printed sets or cahiers by Chereau the publisher, and were advertised in the Mercure in March 1734.

The centrepiece depicted in this plate was made in silver for Evelyn Pierrepont, second Duke of Kingston. The two tureens appeared as Lot 18 in the Polovtsoff Sale at the Galerie George Petit, Paris, 2-4 December 1909. They were illustrated in 'Just Aurèle Meissonnier Orfèvre du Roi' by R. Carsix, Revue de l'Art Ancien et Moderne, Vol.26, 1909, pp.395-399.
