Physical description

Cartoon (on 2 sheets joined) for a lunette, probably emblematic of Zoology, showing a draped female figure, reclining with a lion at her back, holding a fish, and with an open book on her lap; to the left is a peacock, and to the right a putto, holding a ram by the horn. The cartoon appears to be approximately half size. The lunette is one of eleven by the artist, which decorate the ceiling alcoves of the staircase in the Natural History Museum of Vienna.

Object history note

This lunette is one of eleven by the artist, which decorate the ceiling alcoves of the staircase in the Natural History Museum, Vienna, built between 1872 and 1881.
