Untitled (Self-Portrait) 1919 Edward Gordon Craig Masterful in his economic use of line, Craig suggests his arms and feet through a mere few cuts in the wood block. He shows himself, in his trademark hat, pointing the way forward with his staff. Through operating as a visual artist, Craig could claim status for himself in his other role as theatre revolutionary, an 'Artist of the Theatre of the Future'. Woodcut Museum no. E.172-1968
Object history
This woodcut was reproduced as part of the poster for the Gordon Craig Commemorative Exhibition held at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, New York, 1967. The initials 'ER' in the inscription refer to Enid Rose, author of 'Gordon Craig and the Theatre', London 1931.
