Marks and inscriptions
Inscribed 'Leghorn'; in ink 'Leghorn from the Roads'; and on the original mount '21'. Signed and dated in monogram /AWPugin / 1847'.
Object history
These two sketches of Leghorn have been mounted together, and must have formed a page in one of Pugin's bound sketchbooks. Pugin's diary for 1847 records that he left Marseilles by sea on 21 April. the entry for the next day reads 'caught [?] up in Leghorn roads'. Pugin spent 23 April in Leghorn, and that night he continued his journey to Rome.
