Place of origin |
Linen sampler embroidered with coloured silks in cross-stitch, back-stitch, Algerian eye stitch and satin stitch. The top half of the sampler is filled with different versions of the alphabet and on the fifth row down, the name 'SIKE IEMES' and a few small motifs of a tree, windmill, stag, birds, crown and heart, and man with walking stick. At the bottom of the sampler are the initials 'SY' with a flowering tree between the letters and the date 1731. The rest of the sampler is filled with motifs, mostly flowers, trees and birds together with a curious edifice with a cross on top. The date 1734 and the initials 'S.Y.' (repeated twice) occur also. The colours are predominantly blues, greens, buffs and yellow.
