These postcards were made in France and sold to troops stationed there during the First World War. They were cheaper to post than letters, and soldiers from both sides sent them home to their loved ones. This example was sent by Sapper Jack Coles to his wife Maud and their little son Frankie.

Embroidered postcard from a group of 16 (Christmas, birthday, and misc.) from Sapper J.W. Coles (stationed in France) sent to his wife Maud and son Frank. Coloured silk embroidery on muslin mounted on cards with embossed paper borders, some in the form of envelopes containing a small card. Most inscribed with pencil and messages, some dated December 1918
