'Lollipop Isle' was a favourite theme of the Finnish designer Oiva Toikka. This piece, chosen from an exhibition of Finnish arts and crafts held in London in 1969, seems to be one of the earliest examples. Toikka began his career at the Arabia ceramics factory and became art director at the Nuutajärvi glassworks in 1963. By the early 1970s Toikka was designing glass forms clearly related to this piece, but they were floor-standing and had a freer and more exuberant style.

| Gallery label | Oiva Toikka (b.1931) trained in art and ceramics at the Central School of Industrial Design, Helsinki. He began his career at the ceramic manufacturers, Arabia, becoming art director at Nuutajärvi glassworks in 1963. 'Lollipop Isle' appears to be one of the earliest examples of a favourite Toikka theme. It was chosen by the Museum from an exhibition of Finnish arts and crafts held at Heal's Mansard Gallery in 1969. By the early 1970s Toikka was designing sculptural forms clearly related to this but floor-standing and far more freely expressed, allowing full rein to his naturally exuberant character. |
