This leaf is from an early to mid 14th century Italian Gradual, the principal choir books used in the Mass and containing all the necessary chants according to the liturgical year. The historiated initial 'R' contains a bearded figure (maybe a prophet) kneeling in prayer.

The initial introduces the introit to the Mass on the first Sunday of Advent, beginning 'Rorate caeli' (literally "Heavens, drop down dew"), from Isaiah 45:8. Rubric: FR iiiia. Quatuor temporum. Introitus. Rorate celis desuper et nubes... 7 lines of music (staves of 4 red lines) and text In the outer margin, in red and blue: 'VIII'. |
