Anonymous draughtsman Design for a coffee pot. About 1865 Pencil This design comes from a large group of sheets each of which is drawn in the same technique, one side of each design being off set from a pencil drawing on the other. They reflect a search for new vessel forms, and a new fashion in the 1860s for reviing the late eighteenth century technique of 'bright cut' engraving. Here, however, the designer has used a pattern based on sixteenth century grotesque ornament. The dominance of the ornament suggests that the drawings may not be designs for the vessels themselves but for the engraving on them. The anonymous designer was probably working for a large silver manufacturer. 9076.N
