Object history | This sketch once formed part of a single sheet with 9241:4. The combined rectos show 2 sketches for a centrepiece with stags on the base, a centrepiece or cistern in the shape of a vase on winged lions feet with figures on the side of a vase and 2 sketches for a centrepiece surmounted by a seated male figure with 2 supporting female figures with raised arms beside the stem and the feet formed as winged cherubs' heads. Also on the sheet is a sketch of a standing figure in a smock, perhaps intended for a centrepiece. On the combined rectos is another sketch for a centrepiece surmounted by a seated male figure supported by other figures with raised arms, and a sketch of a centrepiece with a shallow basin at the bottom and the top and female figures bearing baskets on their heads around the stem. Also on the sheet is a faint pencil sketch of another centre piece apparenly with a drum shaped base apparently supporting a vase, and 4 sketches of the ornament on vases copied from prints by Jean Lepautre of bronze vases at Versailles made by Claude Ballin (Maxime Peaud, Inventaire du fonds Francais, Graveurs du XVIIe siecle, Antoine Lepautre, Jacques Lepautre et Jean Lepautre, 1989?),375, 377, 379. One of the sketches for a centrepiece with stags is probably related to a pair of candelabra marked by Paul Storr and hallmarked 1813-14 made for the 6th Duke of Devonshire. For another design for these candelabra see 1200. The other sketches for centrepieces, recto and verso may be related to the same commission. Bought from E. Parsons 13th May 1884 with 70 more drawings for 5 pounds and 4 shillings. |
