  • Ruled lines in black chalk for the inscription at the top, in brown ink, etiam in doc- / trina multa / intricata / inveniuntur / set facile / expediun- / tur (‘Even in learning, many tangled things are found, but they are easily untangled’).
  • Inscribed below, in brown ink, Implicita explicat / Hic etiam reperis ubi cuncta videntur aperta, / Implicita? et studiis expedienda tuis? / Sed bene : vim magnam quod non adhibere necesse est ; / Non erit hac ingens explicuisse labor. Joannes Franciscus rosseels brux[ellensis] poeta in / Gym[nasio] Soc[ieta]tis jesu. brux[ellis] 1683.
  • Inscribed at lower right, in graphite, P. Baut; and just above, in brown ink (with the museum’s inv. no.), 9280.23. Inscribed on verso, at upper centre, in brown ink, No 58x. Inscribed at bottom of mount, in graphite, Bookbinding.

Edwin Parsons (dealer), London; from whom purchased (as a ‘Series of 24 pen drawings representing trades etc.’ as by P. Baut [in cover]) by the museum, 22 July 1884 for £1. 10s. 0d.
