In their earliest form, samplers were put together as personal reference works for embroiderers. They were trials of patterns and stitches that had been copied from others, and records of particular effects achieved that could be recreated again. This is a type known as a band sampler, worked with rows of alphabets in different forms, and the date 1662.

Physical description

The sampler is on linen with silk motifs. The top three rows of letters form the alphabet. Below are six further rows of capital letters in different styles, again forming the alphabet. Below is a row of trees with birds in a conventional style and then three further rows of capital letters forming another alphabet. At the bottom is a large tree with birds and it is flanked by the figures of a man and a woman.
