Honey Pot
ca. 1800 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This honey pot is in the form of a skep (a beehive made of layers of horizontal coils of tied straw). The upper third of the pot is the close fitting cover which lifted off to reveal the glass liner that held the honey.
These pots were popular items of tableware in both silver and Sheffield plate in the early 19th century. This example is made of Sheffield plate, a thin layer of silver fused to a copper core that provided a less expensive alternative to sterling silver. The industry this material created flourished for approximately one hundred years until superseded by electroplating in the 1840s.
