This sari was made in Burhanpur now in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Burhanpur has an ancient textile weaving tradition which continues today. This sari incorporates an ikat silk warp - a type of weaving where the threads are tie-dyed before weaving to create designs in the finished fabric.

Physical description
Sari in two parts, narrow stripes of yellow silk and brick-red cotton warps in field, red, yellow, green and white silk warps in the borders. Border designs of one warp ikat strip, and additional strips with chevron designs in supplementary yellow and white silk warps. Two end borders, both with white and bright pink silk weft bands.

Object history
1883 Register Entry: 'DRESS PIECE (Sari). Red cotton net, every third thread of the warp is of yellow silk. The side borders are striped in yellow, red, white, and green silk. The end borders are in bands of red and white silk with a short fringe. Burhampore. 19th cent. L. 25 ft. 8 in., W. 3 ft. 9 in. Bought 1 pound 5 shillings. 1702 (IS) 1883.'
