Putti holding the Veil of Veronica

Frieze
ca. 1475-1500 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

An old plaster cast from the central section of the frieze exists in the Museo Civico at Bologna. The two putti are derivatives from those which support a wreath in the lower section of Francesco di Simone's monument to Alessandro Tartagni (d. 1477) in San Domenico Maggiore at Bologna, and this, together with the presence of the cast in Bologna, suggests that the frieze may have been carved in Bologna around 1477-81. The frieze probably formed the lower part of a tabernacle. Putti holding the veil of Veronica occur at the base of the tabernacle by Francesco di Simone at Monteluce, outside Perugia, and elsewhere.
