The ink pot is in the form of a cylindrical container of brass with a close fitting domed cover. The decoration is arranged in three horizontal bands divided by narrow bands of running foliage and formalised leaves. The upper frieze shows a pastoral scene with animals, herdsmen and a building, the central frieze contains an inscription, the lower frieze depicts a sultan feasting with musicians and food vessels. The domed lid is engraved with panels of foliage and a circular band of scrolling palmettes. The borders of the designs and the calligraphy are overlaid with silver and the ground is matted with a fire panel and filled with black composition. The base is punched in a design of scales.
The form of this ink pot is derived from sixteenth-century originals and the figurative decoration is based upon illustrations from Persian miniatures.
