Carpet, Akstafa axial design of three stars with stylised birds
DESIGN: Field: Dark blue ground. The central, 8-pointed medallion is white and contains a red rectangle on a quartered diamond lying on a decorated cross. The Medallion above and below is similar but red. From top to bottom of the field are 4 pairs of large-tailed animals and 3 smaller pairs. Elsewhere are other small birds and small geometric motifs.
Borders: there are 4. From the inside:
a) white ground with coloured blobs, perhaps crosses
b) yellow ground with 'S' and reversed 'S' motifs, all in red
c) white ground with simplified 'leaf and wine glass'pattern
d) as b) but in blue on a red ground

Wool knotted pile on wool warp and cotton weft, symmetrical knot WARP: mainly cream wool, sometimes dark brown and sometimes plied together. The cream warp threads are mainly down the sides where there are Z3S; 17 threads per inch (62 per dm) WEFT: white cotton; Z2S; 2 shoots after each row of knots;89 knots per inch (34 per dm). PILE: wool; 11 colours: red, orange, yellow, dark blue, blue, light blue, dark purple, pink, dark brown, light brown, white; symmetrical knot tied around 2 warp threads; 68 knots per inch (1054 per sq. dm). SIDE FINISH: 2 cords overcast with white cotton. END FINISH:Lower: Immediately below the pile is one row of weft twining in red wool then 1" (2.5cms) of plainweave with white cotton weft and a fringe of warp loops 2" (5 cms) long. Upper: 1" (2.5 cms) plainweave with white cotton weft followed by one row of weft twining with white cotton over 3 or more warp threads. Each knot in the fringe contains 7 of these groups. Maximum length of fringe is 4" (10 cms).
