Object history
The tiles were found in the museum, but are recorded as previously belonging to the collection Illustrating Construction and Building Materials in the South Kensington Museum (see references). The tiles had previously been exhibited in the Great Exhibition, 1851.
The tiles were apparently removed from the original manufacturer's frame around 1990, due to its condition. According to a photograph taken at the time, the frame contained nine tiles in a 3x3 formation, with six tiles of a different design (C.98:1 to 6-1998) forming a block, and these three tiles laid as a border along one side (almost certainly the top).
