The Great Exhibition of 1851 was the first large scale temporary international exhibition. Staged in London's Hyde Park, inside the legendary Crystal Palace, it aimed to bring together a complete range of manufactured produce across the arts and sciences. This tile with its pair (Museum no. C.94:2-1998) was among those shown by the firm of Rafael Gonzalez Valls in the Spanish section of the exhibition. The tiles are grouped in the frame as originally shown in 1851.

Tile with painted decoration in blue, Gonzalez Valls, c.1850-51
Physical description
Tile painted with a stylised scrollwork design in blue, and is probably intended for use as a border. This tile, with its pair C.94:2-1998, is mounted in its original frame along with four other tiles of different design (C.94:3 to 6-1998).

Object history
The tiles were found in the museum, but are recorded as previously belonging to the collection Illustrating Construction and Building Materials in the South Kensington Museum (see references). The tiles had previously been exhibited in the Great Exhibition, 1851. The tiles are in the original manufacturer's frame.
