Place of origin

This silk crêpe panel with a central floral motif is woven in silver gilt. Michel Dubost designed it for the Atelier Ducharne in Paris about 1925. Gold and silver clothing was particularly fashionable after the Egyptologist Howard Carter discovered the treasures of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922. Ducharne was a silk merchant who decided to establish his own manufacturing business in 1920. He employed Dubost, a textile designer and teacher, to head his studio. This was situated in the bohemian artistic neighbourhood of Montmartre. The atelier trained young people with no previous experience in weaving. Dubost designed textiles for Atelier Ducharne for a decade, specialising in heavy fabrics with large-scale compositions.
