Carpet, hand knotted woollen pile on woollen warp and weft, Caucasian, 1870s.

WARP: light brown wool; Z3S; 13 threads per inch (52 per dm).

WEFT: red wool; Z-spun, unplied, 2 parallel threads per shoot; 2 shoots after each row of knots; 8 knots per inch (32 per dm).

PILE: wool; 9 colours: dark red, red, yellow, dark green, light green, dark blue, light blue, dark brown, white; symmetrical knot tied around two threads; 52 knots per sq.inch (832 per sq. dm).

SIDE FINISH: 2 cords overcast with red wool.

END FINISH: Lower: incomplete. 1" (2.5 cms) max. plainweave with red wool and short warp loops (1.5 cms long). Upper:missing but evidence of plainweave with red wool.

DESIGN: Field: white ground with many bands of 3 or 4 stars within a dark blue and red lattice. The stars are in diagonal lines of colour.
Main border: red ground with octagons containing a decorated cross alternating with a pair of triangular devices.
Inner border: reciprocal diamond hads in dark brown and light blue outlined in yellow.
Outer border: reciprocal diamond hads in dark brown and light green outlined in dark red.
