This table cover of woven woollen plush was made in the Netherlands in the 1920s. The design has an elongated shield-shaped panel. The motif reflects the interest in so-called 'primitive art' that was generated by artists like Pablo Picasso. At the time there was a fascination with the abstract elements found in objects from unfamiliar cultures, such as African carvings. They influenced Expressionist and Cubist art.

Woollen plush table cover with black ground and a bold symmetrical abstract design of a central elongated shield-shaped panel. The shield is decorated with various geometric devices enclosed by arcs, triangles, dots and other motifs. The design is in soft browns, pinks, pale blue, cream and black.
