Bag Face, hand-knotted woollen pile on woollen warp and weft; Central Asia, Beluch; 19th century.

WARP: white wool; Z2S; 16 threads per inch (64 per dm).

WEFT: dark brown wool; Z2S; 2 shoots after each row of knots; 9 knots per inch (39 per dm).

PILE: wool; 7 colours: dark red, red, very dark green, dark blue, blue, dark brown, white; asymmetrical knot open to the left and tied around 2 threads; 72 knots per sq.inch (1248 per sq.dm).

SIDE FINISH: 2 cords overcast with brown wool.

END FINISH: cut. Lower end has 0 .75" (2 cms) plainweave with dark brown weft decorated in red and white and dark brown complimentary weft float. Upper: 0.5" (1.5 cms)plainweave with dark brown weft with one band of red and brown complimentary weft-wrapping.

DESIGN: Field: dark brown ground divided into four by thin red and blue lines from an 8-pointed star in reds and blue, outlined in brown and then dark blue. On the horizontal bar on both sides are two pairs on inward-facing horns and on the vertical, angular lines suggesting a floral sprig. In each quarter there is a dark blue stylized tendril. The ground has red and white florets scattered over it.

Main Border: dark blue ground with octagonal guls similar to the central one, outlined in either red/blue/red or white.dark blue/brown. On the sides, a red square separates each gul and a line of small, floral guls frames each larger motif. Along the lower and upper borders the main motifs are seaparted by pairs of similar small guls each joined by a striped bar.
Inner and Outer borders: white ground with an angular meander in which the main elements are a stylized blue and red S-motif and red triangular leaves. In the lower right hand corner there are tiny red and white flowerheads.
