Panel
ca. 1400 (made)

Place of origin |
This panel is part of the rich tradition of English stained glass. A great deal was destroyed in the religious conflicts of the period 1500-1700 and only survives in a fragmentary state, as here.
This piece shows architectural window arcading and is made up of red ‘flashed’ glass. Solid red 'pot metal' glass was too dense to transmit light well and in the medieval period glassmakers developed a technique that allows more light through the glass. It consisted of coating ('flashing') clear glass with a thin layer of coloured glass.
