Michel Anguier (1612-1686) was a French sculptor who studied in Rome under the great Baroque artist Alessandro Algardi. He was passionately interested in classical art and while in Rome
produced ten small bronzes of the Greek deities for the royal jeweller, Tessier de
Montarsis. This is almost certainly a cast from one of these figures.

In Greek mythology Ceres was the goddess of agriculture, especially associated with corn. She was often worshipped as the earth-mother, the prime source for fertility.
