In the form of a miniature rapier, the hilt of cast and engraved gold, the grip bound with silver wire, the blade of silver, the hinged pin of gold. Soldered to the blade is a seeded rose of gold, of Tudor form decorated with translucent enamel in red and green. The back of the plain gold rose is stamped 18 within a rectangle.

| Object history | This brooch formerly belonged to the well known fencer Alfred Hutton (1840-1910). The design is based on a continental rapier of about 1570. Hutton was a leading authority on swordsmanship in the late 19th century. He wrote extensively on the subject, has a substantial library of fencing books and frequently advised on sword-bouts on the London stage. He was the author of numerous books on sword-play including Cold Steel, Fixed Bayonets, The Swordsman and Old Sword Play. |
