Middle East, Metalwork. Brass, cast and engraved with champleve decoration, partly inlaid with silver, the ground filled with black composition, Iran, probably 1250-1300 AD. The engraved details have been recut in Safavid times, probably in the Shah Abbas period, and the ground re-filled with black composition. Islamic. Inter-departmental transfer to MES, RF 2011/1170.

Historical context
This casket, and a companion piece with closely related decoration, recut by the same Safavid craftsman belong to a small group of 13th and 14th century wares reworked in the Safavid period.
