Gallery label | Kaj Franck (1911-89) was one of the acknowledged giants of post-war Finnish design. He is best known for his uncompromising, highly principled approach to functionalism in both ceramics and glass (see 9628 and in the ceramics collections the 'Kilta' series). Nevertheless he also demonstrated in his glass a sensual pleasure in colour and, on occasions, whimsicality (see 0395, Circ 194&A-1963, Circ.139&A-1964). Saippuakupla is an early design for Nuutajärvi, for which glassworks Franck's first designs were made in 1951. |
