This panel shows Christ being nailed to the cross in preparation for the crucifixion. This image is a late development in Christian art. It is representative of a movement that started in the period 1200-1300, which showed the sufferings of Christ and his torments. The movement was intended to appeal to the emotional side of human nature. It sought to encourage the viewer to understand and share in the suffering of Christ.
