St Andrew as patron

Panel
1533 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This panel was orginally in Steinfeld Abbey near the German city of Cologne. The figure is St Andrew, one of the original 12 Apostles. He and his brother Simon Peter, also an Apostle, were fishermen who were called by Christ to become his disciples.

According to legend, Andrew was crucified in Greece during the reign of Nero (AD 54-68). It is known that victims were crucified on 'cross saltires', the X-shaped cross shown here. We have no evidence as to the form of execution that Andrew underwent, but he is often shown with this type of cross as his symbol or attribute.

Gerhard Remisch was a glass painter and head of a prolific workshop in the Rhineland in the period 1500-1600.
