The landscape watercolourist and topographical draughtsman Paul Sandby (1731-1809) was one of the founder members of the Royal Academy in 1768, and in the same year was appointed chief drawing master at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich. Although chiefly associated with Windsor, Sandby also made topographical views of London. This watercolour depicts Birdcage Walk which runs along the south of St James's Park, the location of the Wellington Barracks.
