The scene here is mentioned in all four Gospels of the New Testament. According to them, Christ was crucified between two thieves. The thief shown here was the ‘Bad Thief’, on Christ’s left side, who refused to repent of his crimes. On Christ's right side was the 'Good Thief', who did (Museum no. C.314-1928). At the foot of the cross is the kneeling figure of the Virgin Mary with a halo.
Both panels were designed by Gerhard Remisch. He was a glass painter and head of a prolific workshop in the Rhineland in the period 1500-1600.
