The original purpose of the collections of the V&A (then called the South Kensington Museum) was to provide examples of good design to students. This is a watercolour study by a student, made in the Museum, probably in the 1870s or 1880s. Students were required to copy objects as an exercise in close observation of form and ornament.(2013)
