  • The following reference is from Whistler, J. (1971). From realism to symbolism. New York: Columbia University Press. "This print in small scale and black and white, looks forward to Impressionist treatment of the subject of women under parasols in painting, notably by Monet in such works as 'Women in the Garden' (1866-7, Louvre), 'Beach at Trouville' (1870, Tate) and 'Woman with Parasol- Madame Monet and her Son' (1877-8, Mellon Collection). Whistler used the parasol motif frequently in his later composition but in less naturalistic terms, emphasizing instead its abstract, decorative shape."
