Gilbert Sommerlad executed these sketches in this text of The Lady's Not For Burning at the New Theatre Oxford, during the pre-London tour of the production which opened at the Globe Theatre, London, on 11 May 1949. The play was directed by John Gielgud and Esme Percy with sets and costumes designed by Oliver Messel. Gilbert Sommerlad was a member of the resident orchestra at the New Theatre Oxford. The play had originally been produced in London in a different production in March 1948 at the Arts Theatre, directed by Jack Hawkins with a different cast, and sets and costumes by Fanny Taylor, for a two week run extended to three weeks.

Printed text of Christopher Fry's play The Lady's Not For Burning, published by the Oxford University Press, 1949, signed by Christopher Fry, with four pencil sketches by Gilbert Sommerlad (1904-1976) of Esme Percy as Matthew Skipps, John Gielgud as Thomas Mendip, Pamela Brown as Jennet Jourdemayne and Claire Bloom as Alizon Eliot, executed at the New Theatre Oxford during the week commencing 28 March 1949, on the regional tour of the play before its London opening at the Globe Theatre, 11 May 1949.

Printed text of The Lady's Not For Burning by Christopher Fry, printed by Oxford University Press, 1949, bound in green cloth with the title and author's name blocked in gold lettering down the spine, wrapped in a cream book jacket printed in red and blue. On the reverse of the fly leaf there is a pecil caricature by Gilbert Sommerlad of Esme Percy as Matthew Skipps, opposite which on the half title page are three more pencil drawings by Gilbert Sommerlad, of John Gielgud as Thomas Mendip, Claire Bloom as Alizon Eliot, and Pamela Brown as Jennet Jourdemayne.
