Gallery 100, ‘History of photography’, 2011-2012, label text : Seydou Keïta (1921-2001) Young Man with a Flower 1958, printed 2001 Born in Mali, Africa, Keïta began making studio portraits of ordinary citizens in the capital, Bamako, in 1948. By the mid-1950s, European clothes had become fashionable among Mali’s city-dwellers. Few people could afford to dress expensively, so Keïta provided an elaborate wardrobe of clothes and props for his sitters to choose from.
