Seydou Keïta (1921-2001)
Young Man with a Flower
1958, printed 2001

Born in Mali, Africa, Keïta began making studio
portraits of ordinary citizens in the capital, Bamako,
in 1948. By the mid-1950s, European clothes had
become fashionable among Mali’s city-dwellers.
Few people could afford to dress expensively, so
Keïta provided an elaborate wardrobe of clothes
and props for his sitters to choose from.
