This pendant design is unusual when compared with the other Paul Birckenhultz engravings that appear in the V&A collection. Though the inscription indicates the engraving was made by him, the style of the signature does not appear on any of his other engravings. Also, while it is generally akin to Birckenhultz's pendant designs in style, the dimensions of the pendant itself make it smaller than other similar designs. It is possible that this piece was made by Birckenhultz after the work of another designer, or that it was made by a follower of Birckenhultz and meant to appear in his style.

Physical description

Design for a pendant hung from ribbons. At the top a sun set with a gem and beneath it a crescent moon on its side with smaller stars set with gems on either side. Below this group, two birds of prey pick at bunches of fruit. At the bottom of the ornament is a rabbit curled up. The pendant design is hung with three pearls.
