Three-quarter-length, seated, double portrait. On the left is Alathea, wife of the earl of Arundel, turned and facing to the right. She is wearing countesses robes, a crown, pearls and a chain around her neck. In her right hand is a compass and an astrolabe(?) in her left. Thomas Howard, earl of Arundel, is seated on the right, turned to left and looking left toward Alathea. He is gesturing with his right hand toward a globe; the globe is focused on Madagascar and the Indian Ocean; placed on the globe is a piece of paper with a depiction of a horse and lions. To the right is a classical bust.
